What to Expect in Design Trends in 2022

If you have clients looking to add some piazza to their new (or old) space with the latest trends, 2022 is bringing some elements to the design space.

“There are many ways to add the newest trends to your home without a complete renovation,” said Laurel Vernazza, home design expert at The Plan Collection. The Plan Collection predicts that curves, not-so-white kitchens, maximalism, biophilic design, the color black and nature are going to be popular in 2022.

“To refresh your kitchen, you could paint or stain your white cabinets. To add some curves, shop for some small furniture updates, such as a curved ottoman or accent chair,” she added. “Do away with some of the minimalistic design by bringing in elements that really show your personal taste, whether it’s whimsical, colorful or simple.”

Nature is another big trend expected for 2022, added Vernazza. If you didn’t get into plants during the pandemic, now is the time to add some plants to the space, she said. “For windows, replace those heavy, dark curtains with something lighter, such as sheers, to let the light and the view in. To add some maximalism to your space, look for some budget-friendly accents, whether it’s pillows, throws or a rug. Have your kids paint pictures and frame them or if you like to take pictures, frame those and add them to your space. It’s all about personalization and creating a space that you want to be in and enjoy.”

However, it is easy to go overboard, she cautioned. Don’t incorporate every trend, just one or two that works for your home and lifestyle, she added.

“Some trends are not forever. I would choose carefully if deciding to do a whole home makeover,” added Vernazza. “I think maximalism and incorporating nature into your home are two trends that are here to stay. With the state of the world right now and all of the uncertainty of the future as far as traveling and finances, it makes sense people are trying to create their own retreat right in their homes.”
