PAR Handout Wins International Good Design® Award

PAR’s handout on 1031 like-kind exchanges, designed by PAR Digital Design Manager Jessica Garloff, won a 2023 Good Design® award.

Founded in 1950 and presented by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and Metropolitan Arts Press Ltd., Good Design® is the first, oldest and longest-running design prize in the world that honors all design achievements in all its disciplines. Each year, thousands of entries are submitted by design teams around the world. The awards honor both product and industry leaders in design and manufacturing who demonstrate innovation and contemporary design.

The Pennsylvania 1031 Like-Kind Exchanges handout was created to raise awareness about and advocate for 1031 like-kind exchanges in the commonwealth. On June 8, 2022, 175 Realtors® engaged with over 80 legislators during PA Realtor® Day on the Hill to advocate for the recognition of 1031 like-kind exchanges, and the print piece aimed to present the topic to lawmakers in an easily digestible, attention-capturing overview.

The design of the piece incorporated strategically placed icons, statistics and quotes that aligned with PAR’s brand guidelines and effectively broke up the text-heavy layout, allowing for easier and more efficient readability.

On July 8, 2022, Gov. Tom Wolf signed the tax code into law, which included the recognition of 1031 like-kind exchanges. PAR’s handout was acknowledged by many legislators as a crucial tool in aiding the understanding of the issue.

“This Good Design® award is a true honor, and while I had the privilege of accepting it, the real credit goes to the team at PAR,” Garloff says. “From the initial concept to the final execution, this project was a collaborative effort. The team’s dedication to clear communication and impactful design is what truly made this handout a success. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how design can play a role in positive change and I’m grateful to have been part of that process.”

PAR CEO Mike McGee said, “We’re extremely proud of this recognition for Jess and PAR. This award is validation of the work she does for PAR on a regular basis. Her designs help us effectively engage with members, consumers and elected officials.”

Garloff accepted the Good Design® award last month in Athens, Greece. The design piece will be displayed with the other award winners in The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies until May 12, 2024.
