I recently attended NAR’s Leadership Summit in Chicago. The theme of the training was centered around “storytelling” and how we as leaders and everyday real estate practitioners can use storytelling in getting our message across about being a Realtor® and the best sales agent for our clients.
Before you begin your story, know your audience, who you are speaking to and what message do you need to make clear to them to understand your mission and what you are offering them at that time. This can be our clients, legislators or other members. Your goal is to get the listener engaged in your story because people immerse themselves in the stories. When we tell stories that shape our lives, it can affect others as well. Incorporating your stories with open communication will help lead your listener to understand the message.
Another piece of the training that spoke to me was the concept of embracing differences. This is hard because we are all guilty at times of being quick to judge others who are different than us. But when we truly embrace differences, we give others the opportunity to use their strengths as part of your team.
In addition, we spoke about taking our jobs as leaders seriously, but trying not to take ourselves too seriously in the process. I feel strongly that as a leader, it’s important that I am strategic and serious about our organization. That may come across as being stern at times, but it shows that I respect the process and am guiding it along to the best of my ability.
Other tips to consider:
- Be prepared – makes everything else easier.
- Be inclusive – everyone has a chance to be part of the decision-making process.
- Get to know each other.
- Create partnerships using a team approach to leadership.
- Be clear in your roles so we all know who is accountable.
- Set others up for success- you will get more back in the process.
- Celebrate all successes, big and small.
- Smile, laugh and appreciate the opportunities you’ve been given.
