2021 Colors of the Year Aim for Calm Feelings

By: Kelly Leighton on in

After the challenging year that has been 2020, it’s probably not surprising that people are craving calmness.

And the 2021 colors of the year, as chosen by various companies, reflects that. Benjamin Moore picked Aegean teal, Glidden chose aqua fiesta and Sherwin-Williams deemed urbane bronze the 2021 color of the year.

“This year, since we are all in our home so much more, we need these calming colors,” said Bobbi Balicki of Crescent Hill Home Staging & Design LLC in Cranberry Township. “We may have another year of being in our home, and people are trying to work there, as well as have their kids in school at home.”

Speaking of Aegean teal by Benjamin Moore specifically, Balicki said, “With the teal, the blue, green and gray in it are calming colors. Those remind you of the sky and grass. The gray hue is just a hint, but it’s very popular right now in our industry. It blends nicely. We always have gray sofas and gray rugs. We used to see this color often in bedrooms, but now it is branching out, I have seen it on kitchen cabinets and home offices.”

Balicki said if you’re not quite ready to commit to full walls of color, adding small pieces can add a bit of flavor to your home. “You can corporate small pieces, such as an area rug or a lamp. It’s just adding a touch here and there,” she said.

“I definitely think we need to reset after this last year,” added Balicki. “Colors can help that.”

“Don’t be afraid to use this color. Blues are here for a little while and will stay a while,” said Sue Kauffman, founder of SKC Staging.
