Data shows that laundry machines are most commonly located on the first floor of newly built homes, according to the National Association of Home Builders.
In 70% of homes started in 2024, laundry was located on the first floor, compared to 28% on the second floor or higher and only 2% in the basement.
These numbers were only slightly different for the Middle Atlantic Division (comprised of Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey), where basement laundry was a bit more common:
- First floor laundry: 62%
- Second floor laundry: 29%
- Basement laundry: 4%
- Other: 5%
What about laundry in multifamily units?
Of those completed in 2024, 88% of the apartments had individual laundry facilities, and 12% offered shared or no laundry facilities. The Northeast had the highest amount of shared or no facilities at 33%, followed distantly by the West (9%).
