Unique Homes: Levi Deal Mansion in Meyersdale

Wendy Kelly, a member of the Cambria Somerset Association of Realtors®, recently listed a unique home in Meyersdale, Pennsylvania – a historic mansion with various luxurious features and elegant elements.

“The mansion was built by Levi Deal, a timber and coal baron at the turn of the century,” says Debora Fisher, the home’s seller, on the mansion’s website. “Levi was one of 16 children born in Grove City, Pennsylvania. He commissioned the mansion to be built in 1896, and four years later, he and his family moved in. They lived in the mansion for 17 years before returning to Grove City.”

Fisher notes that the mansion’s most notable feature is its architectural style, which is Victorian Chateauesque – the last and most opulent of the Victorian era.

“The Chateauesque style is meant to dominate and brandish the owner’s wealth and power,” she writes. “This style of home was reserved for the very wealthy and was not often seen in the United States outside of New York’s Park Avenue. The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, is the most famous Chateauesque home in the U.S.”

The Levi Deal mansion was completed in 1900 and features 15 rooms, including a ballroom, reception hall, parlors, drawing rooms, a dining room and a library. All rooms are trimmed in native hardwoods, and Fisher adds, “The large leaded glass windows, transoms and doors illuminate the rooms with sparkle and magic throughout the year.”

Run as a bed and breakfast at the time of this writing, the mansion includes five bedrooms and five bathrooms. Other unique features include jetted bathtubs, a chef’s kitchen, a spacious front porch and a detached cottage.

“The Levi Deal Mansion B&B is not just a house,” says Kelly. “It’s a lifestyle.”
