On last night’s episode of ABC’s “Modern Family“, Phil Dunphy showcased his experience as a member of the National Association of Realtors®.
In past episodes, Gloria set up, and now runs, a small business focused on her mother’s sauce recipe. In the episode that aired on Wednesday, May 4, Gloria determined that a competitor stole her sauce recipe and has copied it. She called on Phil to help.
Phil and Gloria confronted the sauce thief in the local grocery store. The thief claimed that she was only involved in the promotion of the sauce, and had nothing to do with the sauce’s production.
Dejected, Phil and Gloria left. Phil gave a passionate speech about his occupation being so “boring” that he was bumped from career day. Gloria commended Phil for his job as a real estate agent. However, Phil stopped Gloria and corrected her.
“First of all, I’m not just a real estate agent. I’m a Realtor®. I’m a member of a national association,” Dunphy explained. Phil continued by stating as a Realtor®, he’s bound by the Realtor® Code of Ethics and that is what his Realtor® pin represents.
Later in the episode, the duo decided to confront the sauce thief once again. This time at her home.
After the thief confessed to her crime, she explained that she patented the recipe so there was nothing Phil and Gloria could do. But interactions with the thief’s grandson led Phil to piece together a history of the home. View Phil’s analysis below.

As she realized her act was up, the sauce thief exclaimed, “How do you know all of this? Are you some kind of real estate agent?” Gloria shot back with “No! He’s a Realtor®! There’s a difference somehow.”
In all, Phil’s recognition as a Realtor® received under five minutes of air-time on “Modern Family”. But educating consumers on the difference between real estate agents and Realtors® is timeless.
“Modern Family” has won 21 Primetime Emmy Awards including Outstanding Comedy Series since 2010.
