Seventy-five percent of people said they have good neighbors.
According to realtor.com®’s Good Neighbor Report, most people believe the top characteristics of a good neighbor include trustworthiness (according to 59 percent), quietness (50 percent), friendliness (46 percent) and respect (43 percent). Being clean, neat and mature are also favorable traits. Additionally, most people don’t think you have to be good friends with your neighbor to have a positive relationship. Men are more likely to think they have good neighbors over women, at 82 percent compared to 72 percent, while baby boomers are more likely to think they have good neighbors (81 percent) compared to Generation X (76 percent) and millennials and Generation Z (72 percent).
“While it’s true that some people focus on what annoys them about their neighbor, it’s a welcome surprise to see that people generally think positively of their neighbors,” said Nate Johnson, chief marketing officer at realtor.com®. “Trust and dependability plays an integral part in helping a neighborhood feel like ‘home’. Building it can be as easy as stopping by to say hello.”
There are, of course, a few characteristics that make people consider their neighbors less than ideal. According to 67 percent, being disrespectful of property is worst trait for a neighbor, followed by being loud at 60 percent and untrustworthy at 54 percent. Nosiness, messiness and unfriendliness are also considered less-than-ideal characteristics for a neighbor.
To make a good impression on new neighbors, the top suggestion was just a simple introduction, according to 65 percent.
