Going Gray: This year’s color trend

Gray has been determined the color of 2015.

Whether it be on your walls or your roof, gray is the way to go this year.

“There’s dignity and grace to different shades of gray that no other color quite captures,” said color trends forecaster Kate Smith of Sensational Color. “The selection of gray indicates a person is diligent, secure in his or her environment and conservative. We’re seeing today’s homeowners are embracing shades of gray on everything from their cars to their home interiors to their roofs.”

Gray tends to be a go-to color for how easily it matches with other colors. However, the color has become even more popular lately.

“Gray has been a huge trend for homeowners and homebuyers for the past two to three years,” said Kate Hart, president of Hart and Associates Staging and Design.

“I think gray commands a space and makes it feel strong, stable and sophisticated. Most of my clients want a less traditional-looking home and instead want a more transitional space,” added Hart.

Hart recommends using a gray wall color such as Revere Pewter from Benjamin Moore or Colonnade Gray from Sherwin Williams as a starting point in homes because they are great neutrals, and allow for the architectural accents in the space to still pop, she said.

“It is amazing how changing out a wall color to gray refreshes the entire space. If you are anxious about ‘going gray,’ then opt for a color with a browner base such as Revere Pewter. Stay clear of grays with a lavender undertone as these can make the space look mauve or 1982 all over again. If you want a strong steely gray, Dovetail from Sherwin Williams looks great on an accent wall or in a small space such as a powder room,” said Hart.

And don’t forget about the roofs. Gray is a solid choice for color there as well, said Smith.

She added: “Gray roofs have a stately, refined look without being dull. And, a blend of grays is a wise choice that will live up well over the years and allow a homeowner to change out the colors of their siding, trim or main entry door. The universality of a multi-hued gray roof means it will look just as regal in 50 years as it does the day it’s installed.”
