Most Americans (82%) use AI to navigate housing market information, according to a survey from Realtor.com.
The survey found that the most popular AI platforms for gathering real estate insight are ChatGPT (67%) and Gemini (54%). Many respondents (90%) said they also turn to social media for housing-related content, specifically YouTube (73%) and Facebook (57%). For GenZ, TikTok takes the cake (76%).
“The housing market remains a challenge for both buyers and sellers, and Americans are responding by embracing new ways to get smarter about their decisions,” said Realtor.com® Chief Economist Danielle Hale. “From AI platforms to social media, consumers are expanding where they turn for insights. This shift shows that the future of real estate will be shaped not only by market conditions, but also by how quickly people adopt fresh tools and perspectives to navigate them.”
Of all the available information sources, respondents said they felt the following were a positive use of their time:
- Real estate agents (65.6%)
- AI (61.9%)
- Friends, family and neighbors (57.8%)
- Television (55.1%)
- Social media (52.6%)
- News (52.0%)
“The survey highlights that while buyers and sellers are experimenting with new ways to get informed, expert guidance remains critical,” Realtor.com says.
Since more consumers have turned to using AI to find housing information, Realtor.com has launched a new AI-powered search tool on its website. Now, homebuyers can type in exactly what’s on their mind and instantly generate results that fit their needs and preferences.
“For example, a buyer might search ‘three-bedroom ranch style with two bathrooms and a pool in Austin, less than five years old.’ Realtor.com’s AI-powered search not only understands words like ‘ranch,’ but also analyzes listing photos to surface all one-story homes that match the bedroom, bathroom, location and amenity requirements,” Realtor.com says in a press release.
This new AI-powered tool enables buyers to search in the way they speak, eliminating the need to select various search filters. It also learns from real searches and is able to bring users more personalized results over time.
“While consumers benefit from the flexibility and ease, AI-powered search also gives real estate professionals the expert edge,” Realtor.com notes. “By helping agents instantly surface listings that match specific preferences, agents can deliver more tailored experiences and build trust faster. The improved accuracy of search results helps high-intent consumers find the right homes faster.”
