A survey of over 1,000 U.S. homeowners found that 1 in 10 neighbors clash over home upkeep, according to HomeGnome.
The top five neighbor pet peeves were:
- Garbage (27.4%)
- Landscaping and lawn care (22.6%)
- Home maintenance (21.9%)
- Noise (19.4%)
- Pets (16.5%)
To increase the neighborhood’s property value, survey respondents said their neighbors should:
- Invest in landscaping (22.5%)
- Fix their fencing (19.4%)
- Refresh their siding or exterior paint (17.3%)
- Upgrade roofing (15.5%)
- Maintain driveways (12.3%)
Some homeowners have had to address their neighbors’ complaints and take actions including:
- Taking down a tree or removing bushes (12%)
- Installing or moving fencing (7.8%)
- Surveying property lines (4%)
Still, over half of respondents reported being very happy with their current neighborhood, and over half said they felt their neighbors’ choices were somewhat or mostly increasing their property values.
The survey found that the most desirable qualities of a neighbor were:
- Friendly (71.6%)
- Clean (50.2%)
- Quiet (42.3%)
And the top things respondents thought could help improve their neighborhoods were:
- Street lighting (29.1%)
- Affordable housing (19.5%)
- Animal control (18.5%)
- Sidewalks (16.7%)
- Community events (14.9%)
- Law enforcement (14.9%)
