Young Adults Concerned About Economy and Environment

Inflation/cost of living was a top national concern for 81% of Gen Zers and millennials, but environmental issues were also at the forefront, according to a survey by SolarReviews

When asked to name the top three national issues that concerned them the most, the top five issues respondents ages 18-30 said were:

  1. Inflation/cost of living (81%)
  2. Health care system (40.5%)
  3. Environment/climate change (34.5%)
  4. Job market/unemployment (34.25%)
  5. Housing market (32.25%)

Survey findings indicate young adults’ dismal outlooks for the economy, but in a world with rising costs of living and a challenging housing market, many remain concerned about environmental issues. According to the survey, 94.5% of respondents expressed some level of concern for climate change and environmental issues, with over 44% reporting high levels of concern.

Environmental worries have led to many Gen Zers and millennials taking action on their own. Nearly 88% of respondents reported integrating sustainable and eco-friendly practices into their lifestyle at least once a month, with the top practices being:

  1. Recycling (76.25%)
  2. Reducing electricity and water use (60%)
  3. Avoiding single-use plastics (41.5%)
  4. Composting or reducing food waste (40.25%)
  5. Purchasing sustainable products and services (37.75%)

Overall, respondents’ answers suggest that, despite economic and financial concerns, many Gen Zers and young millennials may prioritize eco-friendly home features when saving for and buying their first homes.
