Homebuyers are finding energy efficient windows and sliding doors most desirable, according to the National Association of Home Builders.
As part of their What Home Buyers Really Want Study, NAHB asked consumers about which features and amenities they most wanted. For each feature, they responded with whether they did not want it, were indifferent, found it desirable or found it essential/a must have.
When it came to windows, homebuyers found these features most desirable:
- ENERGY STAR rated windows (83%)
- Triple-pane insulating glass (77%)
- Low e-insulating glass (67%)
- Bay or bow windows (59%)
- Skylights (55%)
- Greenhouse windows (52%)
- Floor-to-ceiling windows (51%)
- Gas-filled insulated glass (47%)
ENERGY STAR windows continue to be a top feature wanted by homebuyers, with at least 83% of survey respondents naming them each year since 2017. In 2023, 51% found them desirable, while 32% called them essential.
The top door features included:
- Sliding patio door (64%)
- Hinged/French patio door (64%)
- Entry door with decorative glass panels (60%)
- Double main entry door (58%)
While sliding patio doors and hinged/French patio doors were equally desired, more respondents said that a sliding patio door was essential (20%) than a hinged/French patio door (16%).
