“Lancaster, Pennsylvania, stands out as one of the best small cities in America for a number of reasons that blend rich history, vibrant culture and modern convenience,” says Lancaster County Association of Realtors® President Jeff Peters.
WalletHub recently named Lancaster the eighth best small city in the country, placing in the 99th percentile based on factors including affordability, economic health, education and health, quality of life and safety.
Almost one-third (31%) of Americans prefer the suburbs over urban and rural communities, and small cities like Lancaster can offer residents shorter commutes, better affordability, a closer-knit community and more.
“Lancaster’s deep-rooted history dates back to the 18th century, which is reflected in its diverse architecture, ranging from preserved colonial and federal-style buildings to more contemporary designs,” Peters shares. “Nineteenth-century architect C. Emlen Urban placed his touch on hundreds of buildings in Lancaster City that still stand proudly today. This historical charm is perfectly complemented by a thriving arts and entertainment scene.”
“One of Lancaster’s cultural highlights is the Fulton Opera House, America’s oldest continuously operating theater, which offers a diverse range of performances in a beautiful National Historic Landmark building. For those who appreciate local flavors and traditions, Lancaster Central market – the country’s oldest continuously operating public farmer’s market – provides a taste of the region’s rich agricultural heritage with fresh, locally sourced goods.”
“The city’s dining options are plentiful and diverse, from farm-to-table eateries and trendy cafes to fine dining, showcasing the region’s unique blend of Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine with contemporary culinary influences,” Peters adds. “In recent years, Lancaster has experienced significant redevelopment, with repurposed residential dwellings and new commercial spaces breathing fresh life into the city while preserving its historical character. This, paired with affordability, makes it an attractive place to live for families, young professionals and retirees alike.”
Peters also highlights Lancaster’s desirable location in relation to larger cities, as well as its ability to host large gatherings on its own.
“The Lancaster Train Station is popular among commuters and tourists alike, offering convenient connections to Philadelphia, New York City and Washington, D.C., making it a great home base for those who work in larger cities but want the quieter, more affordable lifestyle of a small town,” he says.
“The city is also fully equipped to host large conventions, with modern venues like the Lancaster County Convention Center located in the heart of downtown, providing ample space for meetings and large gatherings. Throughout the year, Lancaster hosts a variety of seasonal events that bring the community together, from vibrant arts festivals to holiday markets and outdoor concerts, contributing to the city’s sense of community and lively atmosphere.”
“Lancaster City offers a unique combination of historical charm, cultural vibrancy, modern convenience and small-town warmth, making it one of the best small cities in America,” Peters concludes.
