Homebuying Deal Breakers: What Turns Buyers Away

When looking for a home to buy, some things can make or break the decision to pursue a listing. Here are some homebuying deal breakers revealed in a survey by 2-10 Home Buyers Warranty

First Impressions Count 

When looking at homes, 25% said they take 10 minutes or less to decide if a house is right for them, and 27% said they go with their gut over pausing and thinking.  

Additionally, 49% have walked away from a home immediately due to a minor issue. 

The biggest immediate deal breakers: 

  1. Mold smell (89%) 
  2. Uneven floors (77%) 
  3. Smoke smell (73%) 
  4. Crooked walls (73%) (tie) 
  5. Located on a busy road (63%) 

          Impressions from the seller matter too – 58% said they’ve walked away for this reason. 

          And here’s a spooky fact: 14% said they have gotten a “bad vibe” from a home … only to discover it was a former crime scene. 

          The top defects that respondents said made them suspicious were: 

          1. Visible patches/obvious repair shortcuts (26%) 
          2. Home listing conspicuously cheaper than others in the area (23%) 
          3. Recent flip with no renovation details (17%) 
          4. “Off-limits” rooms on tour (17%) (tie) 
          5. Everything looks “too new” (5%) 

                  Non-Negotiables 

                  There are some hills that homebuyers are willing to die on. The top non-negotiables according to survey respondents were: 

                  1. Outdoor space (56%)
                  2. Central air conditioning (54%) 
                  3. Quiet neighborhood (50%) 
                  4. Natural light (43%) 
                  5. Garage (38%)
