When looking for a home to buy, some things can make or break the decision to pursue a listing. Here are some homebuying deal breakers revealed in a survey by 2-10 Home Buyers Warranty.
First Impressions Count
When looking at homes, 25% said they take 10 minutes or less to decide if a house is right for them, and 27% said they go with their gut over pausing and thinking.
Additionally, 49% have walked away from a home immediately due to a minor issue.
The biggest immediate deal breakers:
- Mold smell (89%)
- Uneven floors (77%)
- Smoke smell (73%)
- Crooked walls (73%) (tie)
- Located on a busy road (63%)
Impressions from the seller matter too – 58% said they’ve walked away for this reason.
And here’s a spooky fact: 14% said they have gotten a “bad vibe” from a home … only to discover it was a former crime scene.
The top defects that respondents said made them suspicious were:
- Visible patches/obvious repair shortcuts (26%)
- Home listing conspicuously cheaper than others in the area (23%)
- Recent flip with no renovation details (17%)
- “Off-limits” rooms on tour (17%) (tie)
- Everything looks “too new” (5%)
Non-Negotiables
There are some hills that homebuyers are willing to die on. The top non-negotiables according to survey respondents were:
- Outdoor space (56%)
- Central air conditioning (54%)
- Quiet neighborhood (50%)
- Natural light (43%)
- Garage (38%)
