In the Season 6 finale of HGTV’s show “Ugliest House in America,” a home in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, was given the titular honor before being made over into a prettier, pinker dwelling.
After a season of searching each region across the country, the show’s host, actress and comedian Retta, found that the Upper Darby row house checked her boxes for “dysfunctionality, anti-appeal, pure unsightliness and downright shock value.” From the outside, the home was average-looking. On the inside, it was a mess of eclectic art projects ranging from mirror collages to trinkets embedded in the interior brick walls.
“The inside makes it clear the previous owners’ artistic license should have been revoked,” Retta critiqued. “There’s no method. It’s just madness.”
With the help of “Windy City Rehab” host Alison Victoria, Retta transformed the ugly house into something completely new.
In HGTV’s words, “an ugly duckling became a pink swan,” as the home now has various pink features throughout. The once dull exterior is newly alit by white paint and a pastel pink front door, and the kitchen, previously a cacophony of fragmented mirrors and contrasting, outdated patterns, now features sleek wood floors with a pink fridge, pink oven and pink vent hood.
Another pink feature: a unique bonus room with pink flamingo wallpaper, pink disco balls and pink couches. This crescent-shaped sunroom used to be loud in a different way, featuring a mosaic-style stone floor, stained glass windows, glass brick walls and cigar box lids doubling as wallpaper.
“Before, it was a weird mess of a nightmare,” Victoria said of the sunroom. “But now it’s a pink paradise.”
As for the rest of the house, it’s much more mellow. The living room now has whitewashed brick walls, wood floors, neutral framed art, midcentury-inspired white chairs and various leafy green plants brightening up the previously dreary, chaotic atmosphere. Still, even the home’s more neutral spaces have tasteful hints of pink, which is (unsurprisingly) homeowner Justine’s favorite color.
