Camp Hill, a borough in Cumberland County, was named the most livable retirement location after an analysis by GoBankingRates. The analysis compared median incomes, cost of living, livability and crime rates in all towns with 1,000 to 10,000 residents to find the most ideal ones for retired residents.
With a population of about 8,163, Camp Hill tops the chart of places for retirees with a livability score of 92 out of 100. The borough’s average monthly cost of living is $3,356, and the crime rate per 1,000 residents is about 9.37.
Camp Hill also has a significant over-65 population of about 16.6%, making it a welcoming community for retirees.
“I’m not surprised that Camp Hill has received this distinction,” says Greater Harrisburg Association of Realtors® President Tracy Klinger. “Camp Hill offers abundant eateries and shopping, including a popular farmer’s market. There are plenty of recreational activities nearby, from live theater at the Oyster Mill Playhouse to minor league baseball with the Harrisburg Senators. State game lands and nearby parks provide options for the outdoor enthusiasts.”
“Another important consideration for retirees is healthcare,” Klinger adds. “Camp Hill is conveniently located in close proximity to area hospitals as well as independent and assisted living facilities. Home prices are more affordable compared to the rest of Cumberland County. In 2023, the median home price for Cumberland County (excluding Camp Hill) was $302,000, compared to $285,000 for homes with a Camp Hill mailing address.”
