Aging in Place Remodeling Projects Are Decreasing

Only 56% of professional remodelers were involved in projects designed to allow homeowners to age in place as of Q1 2025, an all-time low according to the National Association of Home Builders

In recent years, the number of remodeling companies involved in aging-in-place home modification projects was:

  • Q1 2023: 63%
  • Q4 2018: 77%
  • Q4 2016: 80%
  • Q2 2013: 72%

However, although 2025 may see fewer aging-in-place projects, remodelers have experienced an increase in these modification requests overall. Sixty-one percent of remodelers said that, in the past five years, they have seen “some increase” in aging-in-place requests, and 12% said they’ve seen a significant increase.

Remodelers reported the top five modifications they completed in 2024 were:

  1. Grab bar (87%)
  2. Curbless shower (78%)
  3. Installing higher toilets (71%)
  4. Widen doorways (52%)
  5. Ramps or lower thresholds (44%)

Regardless of project involvement or requests, familiarity with aging in place as a concept remains high. In Q1 2025, 66% of professional remodelers reported that some consumers seemed familiar with the idea, and 30% said that most were familiar.

Over the years, the number of remodelers who have said consumers have no familiarity with aging in place has generally declined, and the number who have reported that most consumers are familiar has increased.

In general, receptiveness to aging-in-place modifications is positive. When asked, “How receptive are potential clients to incorporating your suggested aging-in-place modifications?”, remodelers said:

  1. Somewhat receptive (51%)
  2. Very receptive (48%)
  3. Not at all receptive (2%)
