
For new homeowners, moving costs can add up quickly on top of their down payment, closing costs and other expenses that come with a new place. Here are nine tips to keep moving costs down, from Point2.
1. Don’t Overpack
Whether you’re moving yourself or hiring professional movers, packing more means more boxes, more transportation and more time. Take the time to sell or donate anything you don’t need or want. This will also help save space in your new home.
2. Look at the Fine Print
If you’re hiring professional movers, be clear with your instructions ahead of time to avoid incurring extra fees. To know exactly what to expect from the moving company, read the agreement carefully before signing, looking for any hidden costs.
3. Time Your Move
Summer is typically the most popular time for people to move. Knowing this, many moving companies increase their prices during the warmer months. The same is often true for weekends. To save money, aim to hire movers during the cooler months and/or on weekdays.
4. Clear Out the Pantry
In the time leading up to your move, avoid buying unnecessary groceries and try to clear out your pantry, fridge and freezer. Having less food reduces the number of things to pack, and it helps decrease food waste.
5. Do Your Own Packing
Hiring professionals to pack your boxes usually results in an expensive added fee. Give yourself a month or two to pack up your home yourself. This saves money and also reduces the risk of your belongings getting lost or broken.
6. Maximize Packing Space
Again, the goal is to have fewer boxes to move. Make the most of your space by putting smaller items inside of larger ones. Vacuum packing can also free up space. However, avoid making boxes too heavy, which can pose a risk of injury.
7. Upcycle Packing Supplies
Many shops and recycling centers will give you free cardboard boxes if you ask, and it’s likely that people you know might have some lying around as well. In place of bubble wrap, use towels, linens or clothes to protect fragile items, saving both money and space.
8. Take Care of Smaller Items Yourself
Professional moving companies can be great for furniture, appliances and other large items, but taking care of the smaller things on your own can help keep them safe and reduce costs.
9. Ask for Help
Ask family and friends for help moving. Ask for boxes, packing help, transportation, child or pet sitting and other help. If they’re willing to lend a helping hand, your moving process could be more efficient and less expensive in the long run.
