In recent years, color-drenching has made bold waves in interior design. Now, a softer, more-layered look might be taking over.
Gradient walls are poised to be the next big paint trend, according to Real Simple magazine. This design choice features multiple shades from one color family painted in an ascending or descending order according to lightness/darkness.
Real Simple says the trend creates a “warm, cocooning feel while still adding visual interest.”
How to Try It
Choose at least three different shades of the same color – for example, a light blue, medium blue and dark blue. Paint the lowest part of the room (like the baseboards) in the darkest shade, paint the medium shade on the walls and paint the lightest shade on the ceiling. Homes with crown molding may allow for an additional shade, or homeowners can choose to follow their own rules and add more shades.
Real Simple notes that using the darkest shade on the lowest part of the room helps create a grounding effect, while using a lighter shade on the ceiling helps open up the room.
