Residential remodelers outnumber residential builders in the U.S. by 65%, according to the National Association of Home Builders and the most recent (2022) Census Bureau data.
Residential remodelers hit a record high of 128,187 establishments, compared to residential builders (single-family and multifamily) at 77,455.
“Growth in the number of remodelers significantly outpaced that of builders between 2017 and 2022,” NAHB notes. “In that five-year span, the remodeler count increased by 25% (103,818 to 128,187), while the number of builders grew at half that pace – by 12% (68,996 to 77,455).”
Looking back further, since 2007, the number of residential remodelers has grown by 73% (from 73,888), and residential builders have grown by 21% (from 98,067).
Of combined residential builders and remodelers, 2022 saw 62% remodelers and 38% builders. Notably, residential builders have not made up the majority share since 2007 (57% builders and 43% remodelers).
The Census Bureau conducts its Economic Census every five years. Updated numbers on residential remodelers and builders are expected to be released in 2027.
