48% of Housing Stock Dates Back to 1980 or Earlier

As of 2023, the median age of owner-occupied housing was 41 years, according to the National Association of Home Builders. This number is up from 40 years in 2021 and 2022. 

In comparison over the last decade, the share of homes 54 years or older increased from 28% in 2013 to 34% in 2023, accounting for the most significant change in share by age. 

Broken down, the shares of owner-occupied housing by years built are: 

  1. Built 1969 or earlier: 35% 
  2. Built 2000-2009: 15% 
  3. Built 1970 to 1979: 13% 
  4. Built 1990-1999: 13% 
  5. Built 1980 to 1989: 12% 
  6. Built 2010-2019: 9% 
  7. Built 2020 or later: 3% 

Pennsylvania has some of the oldest homes in the country.
