Most Popular Remodeling Projects

Kitchen and bathrooms continue to top homeowners’ remodeling projects.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, remodeling has seen a boost in popularity and according to a recent survey from Houzz, owners are continuing to prioritize the kitchen most. The report found that 28% of owners renovated their kitchens in 2021 to the tune of $15,000. Nearly a quarter (24%) of homeowners renovated their guest or additional bathroom, spending $4,400 on average. And 22% renovated their primary bathroom, spending $9,000 on average. Outside, roofing was the most common project (21%), costing $10,000 on average, followed by painting exteriorly (20%), costing $1,500 on average and windows and skylights (20%), costing $5,000 on average.

Paint was the most popular supply used by renovators at 65%, followed by light fixtures at 51% and faucets and showerheads at 46%. The most popular outdoor supplies included lawn and garden supplies (45%), followed by lawn and gardening equipment (21%) and windows (16%).  As for décor, the most popular indoor decorative pieces homebuyers purchased were rugs (48%), followed by pillows and throws (47%) and large furniture (39%). Outside, the most popular décor included lighting (27%), then large furniture (24%) and small furniture (19%).

Homeowners are also spending more to make features smart in their homes. Nineteen percent added a home assistant to their lives, 15% added a smart thermostat, 14% added smart lighting and wireless doorbell cameras respectively. Outside, 21% invested in smart security cameras and 5% added smart light fixtures.

Electric renovations were also popular among homeowners. More than a quarter (27%) said they updated their plumbing, costing $1,000 on average, followed by electrical work (24%), costing $1,500 on average and automation (also 24%), costing around $400 on average.
