According to a recent survey, all of the features in a typical dream home would total up to $1.3 million.
Northshore Fireplace found via a survey that the average American respondent wants 7.5 rooms with 2,195 square feet in their dream home. A view with peace and quiet is the most desired feature, while the majority of people would prefer a new home versus a fixer-upper. Comfortable, cozy and spacious are the the top three words people used to describe their dream home. The most desired luxuries for respondents were land and privacy.
The ideal setting differed among genders and generations. Men are more likely to want to live on a beach, while more women want to live in the country. Millennials prefer suburbs, Generation X prefers the country and boomers want the beach. Interestingly, only 15 percent of all respondents said that being near a good school is important, while just 11 percent said they want to be near entertainment and nightlife. In fact, 46 percent said they would spend the most time in their dream house in either the living room or family room.
For exterior style, millennials and Generation X both want modern, while boomers said ranch. Inside, men prefer modern, while women prefer traditional, boomers and Gen X want traditional, while millennials, again, want modern.
Some respondents reported they already live in their dream home. More than half of those people reside in the suburbs, while 25 percent live in a rural area and 24 percent live in the city.
Sixty-four percent of respondents believe they will live in their dream home within their lifetime.
