Pittsburgh Offers More Space for Less Costs, Report Finds

By Kelly Leighton | Aug. 17, 2020 | 2 min. read

With more and more people working remotely and spending more time in their homes than ever before, it’s no surprise that consumers are looking for bigger homes because some people just need more room.

And in Pennsylvania, where should you head? Pittsburgh was recently named the second-best place in the United States to get the most space for your money in the housing market, according to realtor.com®.

The report looked at the top 100 metros and their surrounding small towns and found Youngstown, Ohio to be the best, followed by Pittsburgh. In Pittsburgh, the median listing price is $247,450, with a median price per square foot of $65. An earlier realtor.com® report found that the most wanted attribute during the April phase of the pandemic was space, and if your clients agree with the majority, perhaps they can get the best bang for their buck in the Steel City.

“As a lifelong ‘yinzer’ with 40+ years in real estate, I believe the Pittsburgh market has historically been a great place for ‘value for the dollar’ when buying a home,” said Jim Jarrett, president-elect of the Realtors® Association of Metropolitan Pittsburgh. “The area is usually rated near the top of the list in a variety of housing categories, and I feel that trend will continue in the future.”

He’s not wrong. Pittsburgh has been named one of the most affordable places with job opportunities, a great place for new graduates and the best city for first-time buyers, to name a few accolades.

“Great schools, great health care, great culture and arts, the Steelers, the Penguins, Primanti Brothers… who wouldn’t want to live here?” Jarrett added.
