How many of your clients are DIY-ers? And how many call a professional as soon as they can when something goes awry or when they want to update?
According to a recent Porch.com survey, more than 60 percent of respondents, including millennialls, Generation X and baby boomers consider themselves handy. In fact, more millennials consider themselves handy over any other generation. And while men were significantly more likely to consider themselves handy over women, more than half of women said they were handy.
Baby boomers were the most likely to call a professional to do a home repair. Fifty-five percent of millennials will attempt to do a home repair themselves, compared to 43 percent of both boomers and Gen X.
Not surprisingly, baby boomers have the most experience with home repairs, and were 15.5 percent more experienced than millennials with home projects. Across the home, baby boomers were most experienced in bathroom repairs, such a re-tiling a shower, fixing a running toilet and caulking a bathtub, while Gen X was the most handy at fixing a showerhead. In bedrooms, Gen X took the reins on the most likely to know how to assemble furniture and remove a popcorn ceiling, while boomers could most likely install a ceiling fan or patch a hole in the wall.
In the kitchen, boomers were best at installing a gas stove and replacing a kitchen sink, while Gen X claimed dibs on installing a dishwasher. The two generations tied on being able to fix a garbage disposal. In a living room, millennials finally have their time to shine, they are the generation most likely to be able to mount a television. Boomers were most likely to be able to hang a painting, install track lighting and install dimmers, while Gen X were most likely to install hardwood floors better.
Outside, baby boomers took the lead, they were most likely to be able to clean gutters, paint, install a screen door and prepare a plank themselves compared to Generation X and millennials.
However, millennials lead in the “other” category, they are the generation most likely to be able to change car oil, cook for a dinner party and set up a WiFi router, compared to their older counterparts.
