by Kelly Leighton on

Affordability is key for most of today’s homebuyers, as prices reached historic highs this year.

With a national median home price of $435,000, Realtor.com® recently ranked the 20 hottest housing markets and the majority fall under that barrier. Reading was named the 11th hottest housing market. With a median listing price of just $264,950, Reading is one of the most affordable communities on the list. Additionally, homes on the market in Reading typically last a little longer, giving buyers more time to make decisions.

“Reading being one of the hottest housing markets in the country is no surprise to the locals have always know that Berks County is full of opportunity,” said Jason Burkholder, president of the Reading-Berks Association of Realtors®. “The city of Reading offers what everyone is looking for, affordable housing and an opportunity to grow. It attracts a lot of people who want to return to the city to take advantage of all homeownership there has to offer, from local arts and restaurants to sporting events and concerts, Reading offers a lot of options for easy entertainment, as well as wonderful green spaces in the parks.”

According to Realtor.com’s® market research, home price listings in Berks County only rose 6.6% year over year, compared to the national average of 14% year over year.

“The city of Reading is conveniently located in the southeastern part of Pennsylvania making it an attractive town to visit and best for home value in comparison to homes in neighboring states,” said Marisol Torres, treasurer of the Reading-Berks Association of Realtors®. “Reading is less than three hours from Manhattan and 2.5 hours from Jersey City, so therefore, affordability and reasonable distance and travel time to major cities in their states is one of the main reasons the city of Reading has been experiencing a boom in housing since the early 2000s.”
