Twitter profile update gives you the ability to customize

By Kevin Juliano, CAE, RCE | April 16, 2014 | 2 min. read

Like most things in the technology world, social media websites like to keep users on their toes. The latest update from Twitter does just that and you need to be ready.

Twitter unveiled new profiles for its users last week. Dubbed #newprofiles, these updates give users more control over their Twitter profile. Specifically, you will be able to select a tweet and pin it to the top of your Twitter profile.

The header photo also gets a boost. In the past, you have been able to personalize your Twitter profile with a large photo, much like Facebook. With the new Twitter profile, users will be able to upload a larger photo. Specifically, Twitter Support reports that users can create an image 1500 pixels wide by 500 pixels high for their header.

Twitter profile layouts will also change with this update. User profile photos are given more importance and the size of font used in some of your tweets will be changing too. According to Twitter’s new profile announcement, “Tweets that have received more engagement will appear slightly larger, so your best content is easy to find.”

These changes are coming soon to everyone. No timetable has been announced, but high-profile accounts have been converted to the new Twitter profile. Visit @WhiteHouse and @TODAYshow to see the new Twitter profile in action. However, if you’re new to the Twitter world, you are immediately given the new Twitter profile when you register for your account.

Why should you care? If you are using Twitter to connect and engage with clients, brands or friends, you are indirectly promoting yourself. When I search ‘Kevin Smith Pennsylvania’ (I need to because of a certain other Kevin Smith), my Twitter profile ranks higher than other sites because I use it frequently. And by having a more complete and up-to-date Twitter profile, I’m showing I have a better understanding of the platform instead of just a profile for the sake of a profile. Don’t be afraid. Once these changes are rolled out, a few simple tweaks to your existing profile, and you will be up and running in no time.
